1926 – Thurles-born author known as Iota, whose strong female characters challenged Victorian norms, dies in Italy.

Kathleen Mannington Caffyn (nee Hunt), born around 1853 in Waterloo House, Thurles, was an Irish novelist best known under her pseudonym “Iota”.

Educated at home by English and German governesses, shelater trained as a nurse at St Thomas’s Hospital and the Metropolitan Nursing Association in London.

In 1879, she married Stephen Mannington Caffyn, a surgeon and writer. The couple emigrated to Australia in 1880, settling in Melbourne in 1883. There, Kathleen became a founding member of the District Nursing Society of Victoria, advocating for nursing as a scientific profession for educated women. She also began publishing short stories and articles in Australian newspapers and anthologies such as Cooee (1891) and By Creek and Gully (1899).

Returning to London in 1892, she launched her literary career under the name “Iota”. Her debut novel, A Yellow Aster (1894), was a sensational success and became one of the most popular New Woman novels, exploring themes of agnosticism, love, and female independence. Critics noted its influence from Ibsen and Zola, and its bold, slangy heroine challenged Victorian norms.

Over the next decade, she published at least sixteen novels, including Children of Circumstances (1894), A Comedy of Spasms (1895), A Quaker Grandmother (1896), Poor Max (1898) and Anne Mauleverer (1899)

Her works often featured strong Irish female protagonists, including horsewomen and artists, and tackled themes of marriage, morality, and social reform. Though her early writing was progressive, her later novels reverted to more conventional Victorian portrayals of women.

Caffyn was a member of the Ladies Army and Navy Club, andher personal interests included horse-riding, polo, and hunting. She died on 6 February 1926 in a nursing home in Turin, Italy.
