There were no witch hunts in Ireland, a fact which has intrigued historians for decades. Ireland did not escape individual witch trials, however, several of which occurred over the Early Modern Period.

Synopsis

This talk will explore the figure of the witch in an Irish context and with reference to the historic witch trials of Europe. Irish ideas of the witch will be investigated taking into account historical conditions and folkloric beliefs in the complex political terrain of Early Modern Ireland. The witch remains a relevant figure in our own era who imparts a warning from history which we must heed today.

Biography

Dr. Aislinn O’ Keeffe is a researcher, visual artist, and tour guide. Her research explores women’s history and women’s place in society. Topics she has explored include the figure of the witch in 21st century Irish visual art practice and the role of women in the fight for Irish independence. She has given talks for the Office of Public Works, Cahir Social and Historical Society, and at Limerick School of Art and Design. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally, including at the Hunt Museum, Laois Arthouse, and at the Tipperary Museum of Hidden History.
