This engaging and accessible exhibition traces the evolution of policing from the early 19th century to the present day. Beginning in 1814 with the introduction of the Peace Preservation Force during a period of rural unrest, the exhibition follows the development of law enforcement through the County Constabulary and the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC), highlighting how local events in Tipperary shaped national policing structures.

Moving into the early years of the Irish state, the exhibition charts the founding of the Civic Guard (later An Garda Síochána), established to bring stability to a country emerging from conflict. Through powerful personal stories—such as that of Henry Phelan, the first Garda killed on duty—visitors will gain insight into the risks faced by early members of the force.

The exhibition also showcases the continuing evolution of An Garda Síochána throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, including milestone developments such as the introduction of women into the force in 1959, the creation of the Scott Medal for Valour, and the emergence of today’s modern, unarmed and community-focused policing service.

Designed to appeal to a broad audience—including families, schools, history enthusiasts and tourists—the exhibition combines storytelling with authentic artefacts such as a 1950s straight jacket, Gold, Silver and Bronze Scott Medals, original RIC Uniform, and the 1960s standard issue Pretty Polly tights for female Gardaí. Fingerprinting interactive displays and forensic reconstructions.

Visitors will also have opportunities to engage directly with members of An Garda Síochána throughout its extensive run.

A standout feature is the immersive, hands-on crime scene experience, allowing visitors to examine evidence and follow investigative processes, offering a unique insight into modern policing techniques. Additional educational elements such as jigsaws, dress up area, fingerprint station and so much more will be included in this first of its kind exhibition in Tipperary and Ireland.

The exhibition aims not only to inform but also to inspire reflection on the relationship between policing and community life, highlighting the challenges and achievements of those who have served over the past two centuries.
